In the following, we will inform you in detail which personal data (i.e. data that make a reference to your person possible, such as name, address or IP address) we collect on our website for what purpose and how long this data is stored. We also inform you in detail about the rights you have with regard to data processing and how to assert these rights.

Below you will find an overview of the data collected by us. In Section IV we inform you about your rights.

If you have any questions or comments with regard to data protection on our website, please contact us at any time. You can contact us via email to datenschutz@zeit.de.

PART I. General information

We collect various types of data on our website. On the one hand we collect personal data, i.e. data you voluntarily enter, for example when you subscribe for our newsletter or contact us or use similar services.

We only use cookies and tracking technologies which are essential and necessary for internal/general usage analyses, particularly for reach measurement and safeguarding functionality. We have an overriding legitimate interest in such use of those technologies. The legal basis for the data processing in this context is Art. 6(1) sentence 1 lit. f) GDPR.

Further information on data processing

You can find further information on data processing as well as the possibility of withdrawing your consent to individual tracking providers in Part III and Part VI.

The data processing operations are described in detail in parts II and III. In Part IV you can find out what rights you are entitled to in connection with the processing of your data.

Joint controllership of ZEIT Verlagsgruppe

Insofar as your data is processed subject to joint controllership within ZEIT Verlagsgruppe or third parties (“joint controllership”, Art. 26 GDPR), you are informed about this in the following descriptions of the individual data processing operations. You can also find an overview of which companies in ZEIT Verlagsgruppe are involved in which processing operations and how in Part V.

The controllers have concluded an agreement on their joint controllership in accordance with Art. 26(1) GDPR. We will be happy to provide you with further information on request on the joint controllership, particularly the functions and relationships of the joint controllers with respect to data subjects.

Data transmission into third countries

A visit to our website and the use of our services may involve the transmission of certain personal data to third countries, i.e. countries in which the GDPR is not applicable law. Such transmission is carried out in a permissible manner if the European Commission has established that in the third state an adequate level of data protection is required. If an adequacy decision has not been issued by the European Commission, personal data will only be transmitted to a third country if appropriate guarantees are in place in accordance with Art. 46 GDPR or if the conditions provided for in Art. 49 GDPR are fulfilled.

Unless otherwise stated below we use as appropriate guarantees the standard contractual clauses for the transmission of personal data to contract processors in third countries: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal content/DE/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A32010D0087.

Part II. Technically or organisationally necessary data

The use of our website is generally possible without providing personal data. In a few cases, which are listed below, it is however necessary to voluntarily provide personal data, as otherwise we are not able to provide you with our services. We use the data for the purposes specified in detail below.

Ordering magazines

If you order our magazine on our website, the following data must be provided: first name, surname, address and email address. The legal basis for the data processing is Art. 6(1) lit. b) GDPR.

We forward your data for the purposes of handling the order to Wolanski GmbH, Ernst-Robert-Curtius-Str. 6, 53117 Bonn-Buschdorf.

Your personal data is stored for the above-mentioned purposes until the handling of the order is completed. Afterwards your data will be deleted.

Making contact

If you contact us through the contact form on our website or per email, we also receive personal data from you. This data is stored by us in order to process the inquiry (cf. Art. 6(1) lit b) GDPR) and for a period of six months in the event of further questions arising.

We do not use this data for advertising purposes, nor do we pass it on without your consent, unless it is necessary for the fulfilment of the contract.

The data processing in connection with our customer care is subject to joint controllership with other companies in ZEIT Verlagsgruppe. You can find more detailed information on this in Part V.

Use of your data for advertising purposes

If we receive your data for the conclusion of a contract or for a registration with our services, we reserve the right to process the data also for advertising purposes. Under the following conditions we process your data for advertising purposes for similar offers of ours and offers from partner companies and also pass your data on for the purpose of advertising by third parties.

Advertising for similar purposes

We use the personal data you store with us to advertise similar offers of ZEIT-Verlagsgruppe. If we receive your email address in connection with the conclusion of a contract in the broad sense (subscription, shop order, newsletter registration, for Z+, SIT, BOA or a similar service), we are authorised to send you offers to your email address for goods and services of our company similar to the services you have used. We have a business interest in sending advertising offers in this connection.

The processing of your email address is thus based on a legitimate interest. The legal basis is Art. 6(1) lit. f) GDPR in conjunction with Art. 7(3) of the German Unfair Competition Act (Gesetz gegen den unlauteren Wettbewerb).

You can object to the processing of your data for the purposes of direct advertising at any time.

If you have given consent to the sending of advertising emails, the corresponding processing is also based on Art. 6(1) lit a) GDPR. You can withdraw your given consent at any time, e.g. by sending an email to datenschutz@zeit.de.

We store your data for advertising purposes as long as we have no corresponding withdrawal/objection.

Disclosure of your data for advertising by third parties

In addition to advertising our own products, we also forward the postal contact data stored with us to a marketing service provider, who uses your data to send you interesting advertising offers from third parties. Should your address be used by the marketing service provider for the purpose of advertising third-party offers, you will be informed in the mailing that your address has been passed on by us to the marketing service provider.

We have an interest in forwarding personal data to the marketing service provider for the purpose of advertising by third parties. The legal basis for data processing is Art. 6(1) lit. f) GDPR.

You can contact us at any time and find out if we have passed on your address for advertising purposes.

If you have provided consent to the receiving advertising by third parties, the corresponding processing is also based on Art. 6(1) lit. a) GDPR.

You can withdraw your consent at any time, e.g. by sending an email to datenschutz@zeit.de. At any time, you can object to the processing of your data for direct marketing.

But as long as we have not received a corresponding objection and we have a continued interest in a corresponding processing of your data, we store your data for advertising purposes.

Storage of data in our data warehouse

We store your data in a separate database, called the Data Warehouse, for the analysis and control of our advertising measures. Here your personal data is stored and strictly separated from the order data. The latter is available in a pseudonymised form for analysis and reporting purposes. Based on the order data, we use the information to control and optimise the advertising measures. For specific questions only the data is used for creating group profiles and creating engagement and propensity scores.

The separated personal data are subject to specific protection and are only used for selecting advertising.

The data processing in the Data Warehouse is subject to joint controllership with other companies in ZEIT Verlagsgruppe. You can find more detailed information on this in Part V.

The processing of your data is based on a legitimate interest and is thus based on Art. 6(1) lit. f) GDPR.

You can object to the processing at any time, e.g. by sending an email to datenschutz@zeit.de.
